Charlotte County Waste Management workers are on "Waste Watch." It's a program that launched locally in 2009, but now nearly 100 employees are undergoing proper training to identify suspicious activity and respond to emergencies. It's all thanks to a partnership with the sheriff's office, Punta Gorda Police Department, the Fire Department & Emergency Services.
"They're our first eyes and ears to see if maybe someone out walking isn't out there on a normal basis," said Katie Heck with the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office.
Patricia Greene who lives in Punta Gorda said she thinks it's a great idea, considering law enforcement can't be everywhere at all times.
"Waste management knows their routine, the drivers know it," Greene said.
Seventy-five collection trucks serve more than 80,000 single family homes in Charlotte County, five days a week.
