EXCLUSIVE: New Era Debuts Workwear-Inspired Apparel On a Collab With Waste Management

New Era is going green for spring by debuting a workwear-inspired headwear and apparel collaboration with the official Waste Management company, and we've got the first look right here on The Source.

The capsule set utilizes a play on the vibrant & reflective clothing that city workers put on to get the job done for disposal and recycling — neon yellow, orange and grass green hues are typically the standard. This collection includes hoodies, tees and a set of caps (a 59FIFTY® fitted and Retro Crown 9FIFTY® snapback) that feature REPREVE® fibers made from recycled materials. Well-known Waste Management motifs, like the "recycle, reuse, reduce" triangular arrow logo and the brand's "WM" logo, are included in the design process, and the "Make a Better World" and "Think Green" slogans really piece the theme together overall.

Here's what Waste Management Chief Customer Officer Mike Watson had to say about the collab:

"We are excited about this collection inspired by Waste Management's commitment to safety and the environment. This collaboration is truly a unique opportunity to extend and share our brand with others."

— Mike Watson, Waste Management Chief Customer Officer

Rounding out the set is a knit hat, bucket hat and camper cap, which also incorporates the city worker theme so you can be thinking green from head to toe.

The New Era x Waste Management Collection is available right now via Urban Outfitters and on NewEraCap.com. Take a look at the apparel below:

Samuda reaffirms gov't commitment to proper waste management practices

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Government Senator, Matthew Samuda, is reaffirming the Government's commitment to pursuing initiatives that will encourage proper waste management practices.

Among these, he said, is the Plastic Bottle Refund Deposit Scheme, which is slated to come on stream early in the 2019/20 fiscal year. It is intended to reduce littering and encourage recycling.

"It is about 15 per cent of our waste that is plastic and bottle, so one of the things that will come on stream this year is that we will monetise the value of plastic… and you will be able to get back that value when you bring a bottle in," Samuda informed.

"We expect in five years to target 85-90 per cent of the plastic bottles that are being produced and consumed each year. We've seen it work in Rwanda and Norway very well, so we are putting in place what's necessary," he added.

The deposit refund scheme will allow for the application of a deposit on plastic bottles placed on the market and a cash rebate to the consumer on the return of these to designated redemption centres islandwide.

This scheme will be implemented by a reconstituted Recycling Partners Jamaica Limited. Participating private-sector stakeholders have instituted a self-imposed process of $1 per bottle, to start, which will see an initial private-sector investment of $850 million in the first year.

Senator Samuda was speaking during a panel discussion at this year's staging of the Youth Climate Action Expo, hosted by the Jamaica Climate Change Youth Council (JCCYC) at Campion College on March 16.

The expo was held under the theme 'Staying above the Tide: Jamaica After the Plastic Ban'.

The panel discussion focused on topics such as solid waste management, climate change and renewable energy.

Samuda also informed that in the next fiscal year, some 100 new garbage trucks will be added to the National Solid Waste Management Authority's (NSWMA) fleet.

He also noted that several initiatives are being undertaken, to increase the use of renewable energy.

"There are a couple of things that are already taking place. There is a project for 50 schools to receive solar energy to reduce both their carbon footprint and energy costs. That is being coordinated by the National Education Trust and the Development Bank of Jamaica," Senator Samuda said.

"There is the listing of Wigton [Wind Farm] on the Stock Exchange to raise additional capital that will allow for greater expansion on that facility and our wind energy production will go up significantly. Another project, which I think is nearing completion, is the Eight Rivers [Energy Company] solar plant in Westmoreland," he added.

For her part, JCCYC Director and Founder, Eleanor Terrelonge, stressed the need for Jamaicans to develop a culture of separating their garbage.

"We can separate our garbage, recycle what we can recycle and then an option for organic waste is composting. A lot of persons are moving [in this direction], and composting has its own benefits because it can be reused as fertiliser," she stated.

The parent body of the JCCYC, the Jamaica Climate Change Advisory Board (JCCAB), in its community engagement activities, works with the NSWMA and other organisations to further heighten waste management sensitisation and awareness.

"The JCCYC worked with the Jamaica Rural Economy and Ecosystems Adapting to Climate Change (Ja REEACH) Project and community groups in Portland for a few weeks on a solid waste sensitisation campaign," Communication Coordinator at the JCCAB, Dainalyn Swaby said.

She added that "we had implemented some garbage enclosures and skips in the community. The community groups invited the NSWMA and they had a session on the types of waste and how to sort it".

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer, Environmental Solutions Limited, Eleanor Jones, pointed to the need to mitigate sea-level rise.

"We have our airports and ports, our power plants and so on in coastal areas. We are going to have to look at moving back from the shore zone, and for some of the infrastructure, retrofitting to elevate where we can," she stated.

"Also, with sea-level rise, we have to think about our coastal aquifers, because as the levels rise, that saline water moves in, and we already have contamination of our coastal aquifers. So it's a real issue for us," she added.

Jamaica's middle-income economy classification from the United Nations excludes the country from funding allocated by G7 and G20 countries, to undertake certain infrastructural projects.

"The truth is, we know the projects that need to be done, and we are doing the ones that we can afford to do as we can afford to do them. But we won't be able to make those necessary moves until that financing arrangement changes," Senator Samuda explained.

At Insider Monkey we track the activity of some of the best-performing hedge funds like Appaloosa Management, Baupost, and Tiger Global because we determined that some of the stocks that they are collectively bullish on can help us generate returns above the broader indices. Out of thousands of stocks that hedge funds invest in, small-caps can provide the best returns over the long term due to the fact that these companies are less efficiently priced and are usually under the radars of mass-media, analysts and dumb money. This is why we follow the smart money moves in the small-cap space.

Is Waste Management, Inc. (NYSE:WM) the right pick for your portfolio? Money managers are taking a bullish view. The number of long hedge fund bets moved up by 2 in recent months. Our calculations also showed that WM isn't amon g the 30 most popular stocks among hedge funds.

Why do we pay any attention at all to hedge fund sentiment? Our research has shown that hedge funds' large-cap stock picks indeed failed to beat the market between 1999 and 2016. However, we were able to identify in advance a select group of hedge fund holdings that outperformed the market by 32 percentage points since May 2014 through March 12, 2019 (see the details here). We were also able to identify in advance a select group of hedge fund holdings that'll significantly underperform the market. We have been tracking and sharing the list of these stocks since February 2017 and they lost 27.5% through March 12, 2019. That's why we believe hedge fund sentiment is an extremely useful indicator that investors should pay attention to.

Waste Management unveils environmentally friendly fleet

Waste Management introduces its newest clean-burning Compressed Natural Gas fleet servicing Calcasieu and Cameron parishes during a ceremony Wednesday at Prien Lake Park.

    Jack Vanchiere / American Press

Waste Management unveiled its newest compressed natural gas-powered disposal trucks on Wednesday that will service Calcasieu and Cameron parishes and residential and commercial customers in Vinton, Westlake and Iowa, La., in hopes of providing cleaner air and quieter streets.

"Waste Management is pleased to introduce our newest CNG fleet to Southwest Louisiana," said Beverly Gilchrist, district manager of WM Lake Charles. "We are excited to celebrate this transition to a clean and green, CNG-powered fleet here in Lake Charles and the surrounding areas. This is Waste Management's third fleet conversion in Louisiana, and it brings us another step closer to reaching Waste Management's overall sustainability goals."

The conversion comes on the heels of the larger shift to natural gas production and purification in the Lake Area.

"Calcasieu Parish is experiencing unprecedented economic growth, which is in large part due to natural gas," said Calcasieu Parish Police Jury President Kevin White. "Waste Management continues to provide high-quality services to the Police Jury in many areas, including our solid waste stations and convenience centers."

The new CNG fleet in Southwest Louisiana is part of WM's corporate goal of having 80 percent of its vehicles converted to alternative fuels by 2020. With the conversions in Southwest Louisiana, Waste Management has switched more than 7,600 service vehicles to alternative fuels, now the largest alternative fuel waste services fleet on the continent.

Each vehicle switched to CNG lowers diesel fuel consumption by at least 8,000 gallons a year. In addition, each vehicle conversion reduces greenhouse emissions by 22 metric tons, Gilchrist said.

"What does that mean to Southwest Louisiana?," asked Rene Faucheux of Waste Management Government Affairs Gulf Coast. "When the Lake Charles fleet is fully converted, we will convert about 50 service vehicles from diesel to CNG. That will mean a reduction of about 400,000 gallons of diesel burned per year, and an elimination of an estimated 1,100 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually."

Not only has Waste Management sought to introduce cleaner vehicles and also CNG filling stations for themselves and the public, but it has also produced its own renewable fuel. According to their website, WM produces almost 30 percent of the natural gas that fuels their vehicles, from their four landfills, in the form of biogas.

"We'd like to thank Waste Management for its forward-thinking, progressive thinking, when it comes to our environment," said Nathan Keller, safety coordinator for the city of Lake Charles. "We're talking quieter vehicles, safe for our kids for the near future. This is important. We're talking for the growth of Calcasieu Parish, for the city of Lake Charles. We are so pleased that Waste Management chose our location."
